Who I am

My own journey

My background spans both the humanities and the sciences, with postgraduate qualifications in psychology, education, and computer science. I am a parent to three biological and two step-children, who have taught me so much about embracing people with unconditional acceptance and support. This is the root of my passion for working with children, teens, and families who are struggling in any way, particularly if they find they don't fit into existing social boxes easily (such as mixed race and culture families, blended families, LGBTQIA+ families or children, giftedness, ADHD, neurodivergence and autism-spectrum conditions, learning challenges, chronic illness, etc).

There is a lot to navigate as a parent in terms of keeping your own relationship healthy and vibrant, and being the person your children need to help them grow up resilient and confident. Generally, there is no particular professional who is willing to walk with you across the entire landscape and help you tie everything together; I work to fill that gap so that none of my clients ever have to feel alone or lost, supporting you and helping you identify the best professionals to support you in areas that are outside my scope of practice.

I came to counselling through over a decade of working with people in difficult moments, first as a volunteer counsellor at a major South African university, then as a college campus counsellor here in Cape Town. What that experience gave me, more than anything, is a deep respect for how hard it is to ask for help, and how much it matters that someone is truly in your corner when you do.

"I believe every person carries within them the strength and capacity to grow towards flourishing."

My approach

A foundation of person-centred practice

My approach is rooted in the person-centred tradition: unconditional positive regard (which means seeing people exactly as they are, flaws and all, and genuinely accepting and caring for them), deep empathy, and authenticity. I work to create these conditions in every session, because the evidence consistently shows the extent to which the quality of the counselling relationship contributes to making change possible.

Decades of life, teaching, and counselling experience have helped me develop the capacity to really see the strength, potential, and fundamental value - what I think of as the "light" - at the core of every person. I work with people of all ages, neurotypes, cultures, and walks of life to help them see, connect with, and draw on their own deep-seated value to heal and grow towards flourishing in whatever way is most authentic and meaningful for them. Whether you are navigating a crisis, simply feeling that life could be better, or anything in between, I would be honoured to walk a part of your life's journey with you.

From that foundation, I draw on a range of integrative approaches, adapted to client's personal needs.

Neuroscience-Informed

Understanding how your brain and nervous system work, how they interact, and why it matters for how you feel and cope.

Somatic Awareness

Working with what your body feels and holds, not just what your mind knows.

Psychoeducation

Helping you understand your own patterns so you can work with them rather than against them.

Support Resources

I have over a decade of practical tools created and curated specifically to help clients who want practical approaches to making their lives better. When I don't have something appropriate for a client's context or problem, I develop something specifically for them.
